HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 All-in-One Printer

Why does the HP print settings dialog box still not allow borderless printing on "Plain paper, thick" (aka cardstock)? Its the same weight at photo paper. This is a ridiculous restriction that has gone on for far too long. The printer software should be modified to allow borderless printing on "Plain paper, thick." I'm sure HP customers have been asking for this fix for years. Can you please get it done?!

Hi @mtnerd,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The restriction on borderless printing on "Plain paper, thick" (cardstock) using the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015. This limitation is due to several technical and design considerations.

  • Paper Handling Mechanism: Cardstock and thicker papers have different physical properties compared to regular paper or photo paper. They can be more challenging for the printer's feeding mechanism, which is optimized for standard and photo papers.
  • Ink Absorption and Drying: Cardstock absorbs ink differently than photo paper. Photo papers are specially coated to handle borderless printing without ink smearing or uneven drying. Cardstock, not having this coating, might experience issues such as ink bleeding or smudging, especially at the edges.
  • Print Head Movement and Calibration: Borderless printing requires precise movement and calibration of the print head to ensure that the ink is applied evenly across the entire page without any margins. Thicker papers can slightly change the distance between the print head and the paper surface, potentially affecting print quality.
  • Printer Software and Firmware: The software and firmware governing the printer's operations are programmed with these limitations to ensure the best possible print quality and to prevent potential damage to the printer.

While direct modifications to the printer software or firmware are out of reach for end-users, here are a few potential workarounds:

  • Use Compatible Photo Paper: For projects requiring borderless printing, consider using a heavy-weight photo paper that the printer supports for borderless printing.
  • Custom Paper Size and Settings: Some users have found success by creating a custom paper size slightly larger than the cardstock they are using, then trimming the edges after printing. This can simulate a borderless effect.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
