HP Recommended

inserted new ink cartridges supplied by two different stores.  They are authentic cartridges but message says there is a problem with cartridges. This was a working printer prior to replacement.  Also cannot talk to live customer service agent

I understand you're experiencing issues with your HP printer not recognizing newly installed authentic HP ink cartridges, even though the printer was working fine before. Let's walk through some steps to resolve this issue.

Check Cartridge Compatibility

Make sure the cartridges are compatible with your specific printer model and region. HP cartridges are region-specific, and using cartridges from a different region can cause errors.

Reset the Printer

Sometimes a simple reset can clear cartridge recognition issues.

  • With the printer on, disconnect the power cord from the back.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall and then into the printer.
  • Turn the printer back on.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts

Dust or ink residue on the cartridge or printer contacts can prevent proper recognition.

  • Turn off the printer and open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove the cartridges.
  • Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridges and the corresponding contacts inside the printer using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Let them dry for a few minutes, then reinsert the cartridges.

Update Printer Firmware

Outdated firmware can cause cartridge errors, especially with newer cartridges.

Check for HP Instant Ink Restrictions

If your printer is enrolled in HP Instant Ink, it may only accept Instant Ink cartridges.
