I installed my HP 5661 printer that would not print the original test page.  I reinstalled the ink and it said incompatible cartridge for the starter pack.  I purchased the 62 combo pack and installed them right by the 62 HP ink only the correct way and it says incompatible cartridge.  It is unreal the amount of time that is wasted after something goes to jump through hoops to get an answer.

@uggghhhhh, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating, especially since you're using genuine HP cartridges. Here are some troubleshooting steps to fix the "Incompatible Cartridge" error on your HP ENVY 5661 e-All-in-One Printer:

Double-Check the Cartridges

  1. Your printer only supports HP 62 or HP 62XL ink cartridges.
  2. Make sure the cartridges are for your region. HP uses regionalized cartridges, and if the printer was purchased in a different region, the cartridges may not work.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from power.
  2. Remove the ink cartridges.
  3. Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol to clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer.
  4. Let them dry for a few minutes, then reinstall them.

Reset the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug it from the power source.
  3. Wait for at least 5 minutes.
  4. Plug it back in and turn it on.

Try a Firmware Update

  • Go to HP support website and download the latest firmware update for the HP ENVY 5661.
  • Install it on your printer—sometimes firmware updates resolve ink compatibility issues.

Use the Original Setup Cartridges

If this is the first time setting up the printer, it requires HP setup cartridges that came in the box before accepting standard HP 62 cartridges.
