HP OfficeJet 5220 All-in-One Printer

I have cleaned the cartridges, bought new cartridges, powered off and on the printer. It is still only printing in yellow (using color cartridge). Please help me.

Hi @ALJB,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP OfficeJet 5220 All-in-One Printer is only printing in yellow, even after:

  • Cleaning the cartridges
  • Replacing with new cartridges
  • Power cycling the printer

…it likely points to a clogged printheaddriver issue, or cartridge recognition problem.

1. Run Printhead Cleaning (Multiple Times)

  • On the printer control panel:
    • Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
    • Run the cleaning 2–3 times (it may take a few cycles to clear clogs).
  • Print a Print Quality Diagnostic Page to check if other colors appear.

2. Check Ink Levels

  • Even new cartridges can be faulty or not seated properly.
  • On the printer screen or the HP Smart app, check estimated ink levels.
  • Reseat the tri-color cartridge firmly.

3. Use HP Smart App

4. Reinstall Printer Drivers

5. Try Printing a Test Page from Another Device

  • If possible, print from your mobile via the HP Smart app.
  • If the issue persists across devices, it’s likely a hardware issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
