Hi @Sizzle7479 ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand It can be quite frustrating when a new printer isn't functioning properly, especially when it comes to essential functions like printing in black. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue:
- Check Ink Levels: Ensure that the black ink cartridge has enough ink. Sometimes, even new cartridges can be defective or improperly installed.
- Clean Print Head: Since it's a brand new printer, the print head might have some residue or air bubbles blocking the black ink flow. Most printers have a utility for cleaning the print head. You can usually find this option in the printer settings on your computer or directly on the printer's control panel.
- Align Print Head: Sometimes, aligning the print head can resolve printing issues. Again, this is usually done through the printer's settings on your computer or its control panel.
- Run Printer Troubleshooter: Windows 10 has a built-in printer troubleshooter that can help diagnose and potentially fix printing problems. You can find it by going to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Printer > Run the troubleshooter.
- Update Printer Drivers: Make sure your printer drivers are up to date. You can do this by visiting the manufacturer's website and downloading the latest drivers for your specific printer model. Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Check Printer Settings: Ensure that the printer settings on your computer are configured correctly. Make sure that the printer is set to print in black and white or grayscale if you're trying to print a black document.
- Restart Printer: Sometimes, simply restarting the printer can resolve minor issues.

I hope this helps.
