Welcome to the HP English Community --

Sounds like a possible case of "dump and run"  --

The previous owner was perhaps subscribed to Instant Ink.

Regardless, the issue can be sorted.

(Previous Owner) Should have done:

  • Cancel the subscription AND remove all the Instant Ink cartridges from the printer.
  • Return all used / unused Instant Ink Cartridges to HP (who retains ownership of the Instant Ink cartridges)

(Previous Owner) Might have done - "Dump and Run" -- Sell, Donate, Abandon, Give Away the Printer "as is"

  • Old Instant Ink account still tied to printer

AND / OR

  • Cancelled subscription >> Non-Working Instant Ink cartridges still installed in printer

IF the printer were left in a "subscribed" condition, you need the help of an HP agent to free the printer from the defunct Instant Ink account.

Are there Instant Ink cartridges in the printer??

If yes --

You do need to remove all the Instant Ink cartridges from the printer.

Instant Ink cartridges only work with a current subscription and in the printer for which they were assigned.

Contact HP Instant Ink Support for help.

Reminder

Instant Ink is a legal contract -- treat it as such.

Yes, HP Instant Ink Support lives to sell you a subscription to the service.

That said, the subscription is OPTIONAL --

You can say "No, thank you."

You might need to say it more than one time.

You need not subscribe to Instant Ink unless you want to do so.

Once / After the printer is no longer tied to an Instant Ink Account,

You can use the printer --

Purchase a new set of HP ink cartridges and install in the printer.

The service to return Instant Ink cartridges to HP is free -- ask HP Instant Ink Support for a return bag.

What is "Free Ink"?

There is no extra cost for ink.

Ink is provided as part of your subscription - use a drop or use a cup full, ink is included at no extra cost.

Important

After the initial Ink Kit is mailed out, ink is sent (only) when the printer notifies the service that ink is depleted and a shipment is needed.

  • All ink activated by the plan and all ink sent to you works as along as the trail / subscription service is active.

and

  • Subscription / Instant Ink remains the property of HP and should be returned to HP at close (termination) of the service contract.
