Received this printer from a friend. Tried to link it to instant ink and it will not connect. I can't use the ink that came with it as it is not longer registered with Instant ink and and just spent $90 on new ink to try to get this to work. Trying to save money by getting a free printer is costing me more than buying one. I have spent hours trying to figure it out. It is out of warranty so i can't call anyone. I can't link it to instant ink for some unknown reason.
All I want to do is get this printer working !!! With out buying some customer support time or an extended warranty.

Welcome to the HP English Community --
First - Instant Ink is an OPTIONAL service.
True - Should the printer still be associated with your friend's Instant Ink account, you will need an agent to help pry the old account from the printer.
True - Should you decide to subscribe to the service, you might need those new cartridges as "starter" cartridges when the printer is freed from the old account and ready to print using a new Instant Ink subscription account.
Regardless, the issue can be sorted.
(Previous Owner) Should have done:
- Cancel the subscription AND remove all the Instant Ink cartridges from the printer.
- Return all used / unused Instant Ink Cartridges to HP (who retains ownership of the Instant Ink cartridges)
(Previous Owner) Might have done - "Dump and Run" -- Sell, Donate, Abandon, Give Away the Printer "as is"
- Old Instant Ink account still tied to printer
AND / OR
- Cancelled subscription >> Non-Working Instant Ink cartridges still installed in printer
IF the printer were left in a "subscribed" condition, you need the help of an HP agent to free the printer from the defunct Instant Ink account.
Are there Instant Ink cartridges in the printer??
If yes --
You do need to remove all the Instant Ink cartridges from the printer.
Instant Ink cartridges only work with a current subscription and in the printer for which they were assigned.
Contact HP Instant Ink Support for help.
Reminder
Instant Ink is a legal contract -- treat it as such.
Yes, HP Instant Ink Support lives to sell you a subscription to the service.
That said, the subscription is OPTIONAL --
You can say "No, thank you."
You might need to say it more than one time.
You need not subscribe to Instant Ink unless you want to do so.
Once / After the printer is no longer tied to an Instant Ink Account,
You can use the printer --
Purchase a new set of HP ink cartridges and install in the printer.
The service to return Instant Ink cartridges to HP is free -- ask HP Instant Ink Support for a return bag.

What is "Free Ink"?
There is no extra cost for ink.
Ink is provided as part of your subscription - use a drop or use a cup full, ink is included at no extra cost.
Important
After the initial Ink Kit is mailed out, ink is sent (only) when the printer notifies the service that ink is depleted and a shipment is needed.
- All ink activated by the plan and all ink sent to you works as along as the trail / subscription service is active.
and
- Subscription / Instant Ink remains the property of HP and should be returned to HP at close (termination) of the service contract.

Who Benefits?
Instant Ink is an excellent service for those who print regularly, print high-density documents or artwork, or perhaps print lots of homework. For example, those who benefit the most include Teachers, musicians, writers who like hard copy, large families, small business offices, community centers, churches, and others who love -- or need -- to print on paper.

Thank you great information
Yes, I understand Instant ink I have it on my current printer.
This printer is from an estate and the person has passed and this was a hand me down. We can't cancel the subscription. All I want it to get it working on my account. I will try calling; i hope it is a free service. I have spent HOURS trying to get this to work.

You are welcome.
Sure - An Estate printer explains how the printer ended up tangled in a previous account.
Yes - free service - I think Instant Ink Support is an 800 number here in the USA.
You can ask to transfer the printer to your account as an addition or a replacement for your other printer on the service.
Good Luck --
