HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Help! I have an HP series 4520 Envy printer. The color ink was almost out, so I switched my printing to black only. After installing new print cartridges (HP 63), it won't print in color - even when color is selected on the print document screen. The printer is working fine - the test pages will print in color. I have run all the diagnostics and checked with HP Smart Assistant and downloaded new updates. I still cannot print in color from a Word Document or a PDF.

Hi @Kerry117,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've done a lot of troubleshooting already. Here are a few additional steps you can try to resolve the color printing issue with your HP Envy 4520.

Check Printer Settings:

  • Open the Printers & Scanners settings on your computer.
  • Select your HP Envy 4520 printer and go to Manage.
  • Click on Printing Preferences and ensure that the color option is set to Color and not Black & White.

Check the Print Dialog Settings:

  • When you print from a Word Document or PDF, go to the Print dialog box.
  • Ensure that the Color option is selected in the print settings. Sometimes, the default setting might revert to Black & White.

Print Quality Settings:

  • In the Printing Preferences, check the Quality tab. Make sure it is not set to Draft mode, as this can affect color printing.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Make sure your printer firmware is up to date. Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve printing issues. You can check for updates through the HP Smart app or HP’s support website.

Check Ink Cartridge Installation:

  • Ensure that the color ink cartridges are properly installed. Remove and reinstall them to make sure they are seated correctly.

Run Printer Diagnostics:

  • Go to the HP Smart app or the Printer’s control panel and run any available diagnostics or cleaning cycles to ensure that the color cartridges are functioning properly.

Check for Paper Settings:

  • Ensure that the paper type settings in the printer properties match the type of paper you are using. Incorrect settings might affect color output.

Reset Printer:

  • Perform a factory reset on your printer. This can sometimes resolve persistent issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
