Hi @Smokey37,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Download HP Smart:

  • Ensure you have the HP Smart app installed on your device. It is available for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.
  • You can download it from the HP Smart app page.

Open HP Smart:

  • Open the HP Smart app and ensure your printer is connected.

Go to Printer Settings:

  • In the HP Smart app, navigate to your printer by selecting it from the home screen.
  • Click on Printer Settings or Advanced Settings.

Disable Cartridge Protection:

  • Find the Cartridge Protection option under the Settings tab.
  • Turn off Cartridge Protection.

Using Printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Access Embedded Web Server (EWS):

  • Ensure your printer is connected to your network.
  • Find your printer’s IP address by printing a network configuration page. This can usually be done from the printer's control panel under the Network or Wireless Settings.
  • Type the printer’s IP address into a web browser to access the EWS.

Navigate to Settings:

  • In the EWS, go to the Settings or Tools tab.

Disable Cartridge Protection:

  • Locate the HP Cartridge Protection settings.
  • Select Disable or Off.

Using HP Printer Software

Open HP Printer Software:

  • Open the HP Printer Assistant software on your computer. This software is typically installed when you install your printer driver.
  • If you don’t have it installed, you can download it from the HP support page selecting your printer model.

Go to Printer Maintenance:

  • In the HP Printer Assistant, navigate to Printer Maintenance.

Disable Cartridge Protection:

  • Locate and disable the Cartridge Protection setting.

I hope this helps.

I believe I followed all of the techniques suggested. no success. My research found that my 8028e OfficeJet may have "DRM security built in that permanently prevents non-HP cartridges to be used. None of the tips provided an option for turning Cartridge Protection Off. Not holding out for a solution at this point. I think I may have a Boat anchor at this point.

Thank all of you that have posted information to solve this problem. Keep up all the good work.
