Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My printer is giving me the error message, "New, unused cartridges must be used for startup".  I have only used official HP cartridges.  I have put new HP cartridges in and still get this error message.  How do I fix this issue?

Hi @Kenmony,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "New, unused cartridges must be used for startup" error message on your HP Officejet Pro 8725 All-In-One Printer typically occurs when the printer detects that the ink cartridges being used may have been previously used or are not genuine HP cartridges. This error is designed to ensure that the printer starts with fresh, genuine cartridges to avoid potential issues.

To resolve this error, you can try the following steps.

  • Use Genuine HP Cartridges: Ensure that you are using genuine HP ink cartridges that are compatible with your printer model. Using third-party or refilled cartridges can sometimes trigger this error message.
  • Check Cartridge Expiration: Verify that the ink cartridges have not expired. Ink cartridges typically have an expiration date, and if they have expired, the printer may not recognize them as "new." Replace any expired cartridges with fresh ones.
  • Check for Protective Seals: Make sure that you have removed any protective seals or tapes from the cartridges. These seals can block the ink flow and cause the printer to consider the cartridges as unused.
  • Clean the Cartridge Contacts: Sometimes, dirt or residue on the cartridge contacts can prevent proper communication with the printer. Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridges with a lint-free cloth.
  • Restart the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for a few minutes. Then, plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes clear temporary errors.
  • Update Firmware: Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date. HP often releases firmware updates that address various issues, including cartridge recognition problems.
  • Perform a Hard Reset: Perform a hard reset of the printer by disconnecting the power cord while the printer is on. Leave it unplugged for a few minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Remember that using genuine HP ink cartridges is the best way to avoid compatibility and recognition issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
