Cartridge Problem

HP Recommended
HP 6958 Office Jet Printer
macOS 10.15 Catalina

I changed out the black 902XL ink cartridge, with a genuine HP cartridge, yesterday before trying to print Christmas card letters. 

I got the error message "Remove and reinstall the indicated cartridge "k", making sure it is correctly installed."

 

I had 3 different packages of brand-new black 902XL cartridges.  I opened and tried a new one from each of the packages.  The message is the same.

 

I read various suggestions online and tried the unplugging from back and from outlet, cleaning, powering down and back up.  My printer's firmware is up-to-date.   

 

Thank you for any suggestions.

I put my old cartridge back it (it was low) and printed as many letters before the ink ran out.  The system accepted the old cartridge which had come out of one of my HP 2 pack(s) 902XL.
