HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g
Microsoft Windows 11

My printer was working perfectly until the color cartridges were depleted.  I ordered a new HP set and installed the set.  I was told that the cyan one was defective.  I ordered a new color set and installed it again.  The same message appeared.  I took out the cartridge holder and cleaned it with alcohol TWICE.  The error message is still there.  I desperately need to be printing my tax forms.  Everything was working perfectly before the cartridge ran out.

Hi @Lizbet10

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus is stuck with a persistent error related to the cyan cartridge, despite replacing it and cleaning the cartridge holder.

Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Verify Cartridge Installation

  • Steps:
    1. Remove the cyan cartridge and inspect it for any damage or dried ink.
    2. Ensure the protective tape on the cartridge has been fully removed.
    3. Reinsert the cartridge securely, ensuring it clicks into place.

2. Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  • Steps:
    1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
    2. Remove the cyan cartridge and use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridge and the printer.
    3. Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinserting the cartridge.

3. Reset the Printer

  • Steps:
    1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
    2. Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
    3. Test the printer again to see if the issue is resolved.

4. Update Printer Firmware

  • Visit the HP Support website and check for firmware updates for your printer model.
  • Download and install any available updates to ensure compatibility and improved performance.

I have done all that you said a number of times over several days.  The cartridges are all new and the second set I have ordered.  I thought perhaps the first set was defective.  I don't believe two HP sets could be defective.  I am not sure what I am supposed to clean with distilled water, but I have cleaned what I can reach.  It is difficult to get to all the parts in the printhead.

It seems to me that the error message is old but cannot be deleted.  Everything worked fine before I inserted these new color cartridges - two new sets now.
