Hi @DrewB1980
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're encountering a "Cartridge Communication" error, which is fairly common even with new, correct cartridges. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can follow to resolve the issue:
1. Power Cycle the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
- Plug it back in and turn the printer on.
- This can help reset any communication issues between the cartridges and the printer.
2. Check Cartridge Installation
- Open the printer’s cartridge access area and ensure the cartridges are seated properly. They should click into place firmly.
- Remove each cartridge and reinstall them one at a time, ensuring they’re aligned correctly.
- Ensure the protective tape on the new cartridges has been removed (if applicable).
3. Clean the Cartridge Contacts
- Sometimes, the communication error can be caused by dirty contacts.
- Turn off the printer and unplug it to avoid electrical issues.
- Remove the cartridges from the printer.
- Use a clean, lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly dampened with water or rubbing alcohol to gently clean the gold-colored contacts on both the cartridge and in the printer.
- Let the contacts dry completely before reinserting the cartridges.
4. Check for Firmware Updates
- Outdated firmware can cause communication issues with cartridges, especially if you're using compatible or non-HP ink.
- Go to the HP support website or use HP Smart to check if there’s a firmware update available for your printer.
- Install any available updates, as this can fix compatibility issues.
5. Try a Printer Reset
- Some printers allow you to reset the printer to factory settings, which can resolve internal errors.
- This option is usually found in the Settings menu of the printer’s control panel.
- Keep in mind that this will reset your printer settings, so you may need to reconfigure your Wi-Fi or other settings.
6. Test with Another Set of Cartridges
- If the issue persists even after cleaning the contacts, the problem could be with the new cartridges themselves. It's possible they are defective, even though they are the correct model.
- If you have access to another set of compatible cartridges, try installing them to see if the problem is resolved.
7. Perform a Printer Diagnostic
- HP printers often have diagnostic tools available that can help identify the issue with the cartridges.
- Use HP Smart or the printer’s control panel to run a diagnostic check or self-test.
- These tools might provide a more detailed error message or guide you toward a solution.
8. Check for Printer Software or Driver Issues
- Ensure that your printer drivers are up to date. If you’re printing via a computer, outdated drivers can sometimes cause communication errors with the printer.
- Visit the HP support website to download the latest drivers for your printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
