Officejet 6950

My Officejet 6950 is reporting cartridge incorrectly installed after recent firmware update. Applies to HP-compatible (not HP) cartridges only. How can I get back to previous version or correct problem without having to throw away thoroughly good cartridges?

This only tells me what I already know. How can I revert to a previous firmware version which allows me to continue to use the cartridges which had previously been installed and were working fine?
