I replaced all 4 cartridges (HP) at once and it did not recognize the yellow one. (At least the yellow indicator light didn't come on.) Now I've replaced the yellow with a new TOO EXPENSIVE HP cartridge, and none of the indicator lights work. A) I need to get the indicator lights working so the user can see the ink levels, and, B) I'd like to get a refund for the 1st cartridge.

Hi @md-bb,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If the cartridge level indicator lights are not showing on your HP Color LaserJet Pro M452nw printer, there could be a few reasons for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can take.
- Check Cartridge Installation: Ensure that the toner cartridges are properly installed in their respective slots. Sometimes, an improperly seated cartridge can cause communication issues with the printer.
- Cartridge Compatibility: Make sure you are using genuine HP toner cartridges that are compatible with your printer model. Third-party or incompatible cartridges might not communicate properly with the printer.
- Restart Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a minute or two, and then plug it back in. Power it on and see if the indicator lights come back.
- Update Firmware: Outdated firmware can sometimes cause communication issues with the printer's components. Check the HP support website for your printer model and see if there are any firmware updates available. Follow the instructions provided to update the firmware.
- Clean Cartridge Contacts: If the contacts on the toner cartridges or inside the printer are dirty, it might hinder communication. Carefully remove the cartridges and clean the contacts on both the cartridges and the printer with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Reset Printer: Perform a cold reset on the printer. This process varies depending on the printer model, so refer to the user manual or the HP support website for specific instructions.
- Check Toner Levels via Software: You can check the toner levels using the HP printer software installed on your computer. Connect your printer to your computer and open the HP printer software. Look for an option to view the toner levels.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
