This is an Officejet Pro 9020, SN TH95R4624H

All cartridges came in original HP packaging and were purchased at Staples.

Several weeks ago,  the black cartridge was empty so I replaced it.

Up came a "supply system" error, so I tried a different black cartridge and got the same result.  This time the magenta cartridge instantly went from half full to empty, so I replaced it and the "supply system" message complained about both the black and magenta cartridges.  I removed all the cartridges, and the printer head.  I cleaned up the head unit and it's contacts, reinstalled everything, and the supply system message started complaining about the cyan cartridge too.

I was unable to find anything online about the supply system message.  At various times I got messages that the cartridges were genuine and with all the switching around, that one cartridge wa s being re-installed.

Rather than junking the whole unit, ordered a new printhead from NewEgg.  I couldn't find an HP web site where I could order one.  NewEgg took two weeks to deliver the new head from China.

The new head came in elaborate packaging with a plastic guard protecting the printer surface and with all the ink passages pre-primed with ink and with silicone caps to keep stuff from drying out.  There were no setup cartridges. The labeling on the new head is the same as the old one though the manufacturing lot/date/sn labels have different content.

On installation, the printer is now complaining that the head is missing, not detected, or incorrectly installed, and to reinstall it.   Tried that.  Tried cleaning contacts on both sides of the little PC board.

Unplugging and discharging residual charge has no effect.

They say that a definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over and to expect different results.

I haven't tried reinstalling the old head.

Hi @Robbo314,

Thank you for your response,

It sounds like you’ve done quite a bit of troubleshooting with your HP OfficeJet Pro 9020. The "supply system" error you’re encountering, along with the issues following the printhead replacement, can be frustrating. Here are some steps you can take to try to resolve these issues.

Reinstall the Old Printhead:

  • Since you mentioned you haven't tried reinstalling the old printhead, this could help diagnose whether the new printhead is defective. If the old printhead works, then the new one might be faulty.

Check for Updates:

  • Make sure your printer’s firmware is up to date. You can usually check for firmware updates through the HP Smart app or by visiting the HP support website. Sometimes, firmware updates resolve compatibility issues with new parts.

Reset the Printer:

  • Perform a hard reset of the printer:
    • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
    • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
    • Plug it back in and turn it on.

Clean the Printhead Contacts:

  • With both printheads, ensure the contacts on the printhead and the printer are clean. Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water to clean them gently.

Check for Errors and Messages:

  • When you turn on the printer with either printhead installed, pay attention to any error codes or messages. They can provide clues about what might be wrong.

Check the Cartridges:

  • Make sure that the cartridges are properly seated and that there are no obstructions in their slots. Sometimes, a misaligned cartridge can trigger errors.

Check for Firmware Issues:

  • Occasionally, third-party printheads or non-genuine parts can trigger compatibility issues. If the old printhead works and the new one does not, it may be worth contacting the vendor for a replacement.

Note:

If reinstalling the old printhead resolves the issue, you may want to consider getting a different new printhead, preferably directly from HP or an authorized reseller to ensure compatibility.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
