HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

Colors are not printing after replacement of color cartridges. Alignment test print did not print colors, and colors did not print on test print after running printer head cleaning. I used a second set of color cartridges and problem persisted.

Hi @ojjmul,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like there might be a few different issues at play here. Let's troubleshoot step by step.

  • Check Cartridge Installation: Ensure that the color cartridges are properly installed. Sometimes cartridges might not be fully clicked into place, which can prevent them from making proper contact with the printer.
  • Check Cartridge Expiry: Verify that the cartridges are not expired. Even if they are new, cartridges have an expiration date beyond which they may not work correctly.
  • Clean Contacts: Clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridges and inside the printer. Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water to gently wipe the contacts. This ensures there is no dirt or residue interfering with the connection.
  • Printer Driver Update: Make sure your printer driver is up to date. Sometimes outdated drivers can cause communication issues between the printer and the computer.
  • Run Printer Diagnostic Tools: Many printers, including the HP OfficeJet Pro 6978, have built-in diagnostic tools that can help identify and resolve printing issues. Use these tools to print a diagnostic page or perform a printer alignment check.
  • Reset Printer: Try resetting the printer. Turn it off, disconnect the power cord, wait for about 30 seconds, then reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on. This can sometimes resolve temporary issues.
  • Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure your printer has the latest firmware installed. Firmware updates can sometimes fix bugs or compatibility issues that affect printing.
  • Verify Ink Levels: Check the ink levels through the printer software or control panel. Sometimes cartridges might not be properly recognized or could be faulty, despite being new.
  • Test with Another Device: Try printing from a different device (another computer or smartphone) to rule out any issues with the current device or its drivers.

By systematically going through these steps, you should be able to identify and hopefully resolve the issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer not printing colors after replacing the cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
