HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

I hardly ever use my printer HP Officejet Pro 6978 All in One, and when I do we print black because the color is never correct. I have cleaned the printhead and it says everything is good. But I print the test and all colors come out with their levels except Cyan it's blank and no blue comes out. Any help is greatly appreciated. We are about to start our year back up homeschooling and I need the colors to work.

Hi @elizabethM310,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you may have a clogged or dried-out printhead, which is common when printers are not used frequently. Here are some steps to try and resolve the issue with the cyan color on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978.

Steps to Resolve Cyan Color Not Printing:

Check Ink Levels:

  • Ensure that the cyan ink cartridge is not empty or low on ink. If the ink levels are low, replace the cartridge with a new one.

Clean the Printhead:

  • Sometimes, automatic cleaning isn't enough. Perform a manual clean by following these steps:
    1. Turn on the printer.
    2. Open the cartridge access door.
    3. Wait for the carriage to stop moving and be idle.
    4. Remove the ink cartridges.
    5. Lift the latch on the printhead and remove it.
    6. Clean the printhead using a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.
    7. Reinstall the printhead and cartridges.
    8. Close the access door and turn off the printer for a few minutes before turning it back on.

Run a Printhead Cleaning Utility:

  • Use the printer's software to run a printhead cleaning utility. This can often be found in the printer settings or maintenance menu. Follow the instructions on the printer screen or your computer.

Print a Diagnostic Report:

  • Print a Print Quality Diagnostic report to see if the issue persists. This can help identify which colors are not printing correctly.
    1. Load plain white paper in the input tray.
    2. On the printer control panel, swipe down to open the Dashboard, then touch the setup icon (gear icon).
    3. Touch Tools, then touch Print Quality Report.

Soak the Printhead:

  • If the above steps do not resolve the issue, try soaking the printhead in warm, distilled water for about 10-15 minutes. Dry it thoroughly before reinstalling it.

Replace the Printhead:

  • If none of the cleaning methods work, it may be time to replace the printhead.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
