Deskjet 3730 print quality issue

Any helo much appreciated folks!:

HP Deskjet 3730.
• Prints with gaps and faint areas, some areas of the page not printing at all.
• Ink levels look OK (colour is almost full; black is two-thirds full)
• On the control panel of the printer, there is an exclamation mark and rectangle error code in the "8" section - but the manual does not explain what these errors are or how to fix them! It just says they are error codes!

• I have run "print quality diagnostics" which come out badly, and it suggested I run "align printer" but this facility doesn't seem to exist in my System Preferences' "Options & supplies" section - there is no "Printer Utilities" option there (which is what the instructions say to click next.  HP doesn't provide any further solutions - or at least I can't find any.

• I ran level 1 and level 2 cleaning - the 2nd was worse than the first.

I don't want to go to the expense of buying new inks in case that makes no difference.

Anyone who can help I'd massively appreciate it!

I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve this issue by performing the necessary troubleshooting steps. I see that you have already tried the necessary steps to resolve this issue.

 

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your MAC.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

 

Try printing or making a copy to check the result.

 

We cannot conclude if the issue is with the ink cartridges or the printer unless you try with an alternate set of ink cartridges. Please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region regarding the service/replacement options. 

You may create a case on the website to obtain a case number if required. Kindly watch this video to know how.
