The ink cartridges were exhausted. So I replaced them. Then error code 01 flashed. I put them back in again, turned the printer off and back on, and even up plugged it over night and then plugged it back in. No change.. This should be simple but it is not.

Hi @Arron5,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The Error Code 01 on your HP DeskJet 4158e usually indicates an issue with the ink cartridges. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue.
Check Cartridge Installation:
- Make sure the ink cartridges are installed correctly. Remove them and reinstall them firmly until they click into place.
Inspect the Cartridges:
- Check the new cartridges for any protective tape that might not have been removed. Ensure that the copper contacts on the cartridges are clean and undamaged.
Reset the Printer:
- Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for about 60 seconds. Then plug it back in and turn it on.
Try a Different Cartridge:
- If possible, try using another set of ink cartridges to see if the error persists. This will help determine if the issue is with the printer or the cartridges themselves.
Check for Firmware Updates:
- Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date. You can check this on the HP website or through the HP Smart app.
Perform a Hard Reset:
- Perform a hard reset by turning off the printer and unplugging it. Then press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain any residual power before plugging it back in and turning it on.
Check for Obstructions:
- Make sure there are no obstructions in the cartridge area, such as bits of paper or debris.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
