HP OfficeJet 6958 All-in-One Printer

I am an Instant Ink customer and just purchased a new printer and stayed enrolled in instant ink. Do all used and unused cartridges from the old printer need to be sent back to HP Instant Ink since they are not the same? Unless cartridges 902 and 923 are compatible to each other.

Hi @TylerS1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When transitioning to a new printer while remaining enrolled in HP Instant Ink, it's essential to manage the cartridges appropriately. Here’s what you should consider regarding returning cartridges to HP Instant Ink:

Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Cartridges from different printer models, such as those labeled as 902 and 923, are typically not compatible with each other. Each printer model uses specific cartridges designed for that particular printer series.

Returning Cartridges:

  • Used Cartridges: Cartridges that have been used (even partially) in your old printer and are part of your Instant Ink subscription should be returned to HP as part of the recycling and ink replacement program. This ensures that you are receiving new cartridges for your new printer model.
  • Unused Cartridges: If you have unopened, unused cartridges from your old printer that are not compatible with your new printer (902 vs. 923, for instance), you may not need to return these to HP Instant Ink.

Proper Recycling:

  • Ensure that any cartridges you do not need to return are properly recycled according to local recycling guidelines. Many local recycling centers accept empty ink cartridges for recycling.
