Example: Pavilion OfficeJet Pro 86106530
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I bought this 8610 printer a year or so ago.  I used it very lightly and after printing perhaps 100 pages, the printer quit working due to an "incorrectly installed printhead."  Nothing had changed, it just quit working one day.  I purchased a new OEM printhead with ink cartridges as well as a set of regular OEM cartridges.  After installing the new printhead, I installed the ink cartridges I had purchased separately.  These have worked fine for about six months.

Over the past week, the printer has twice quit working while reporting a paper jam on the back side.  There were no paper jams.  It also reported once that the printhead was not installed correctly.

This morning (after the second reported paper jam), the printer said I was out of ink in all three color cartridges.  I replaced them with the OEM cartridges that came with the printhead and I am receiving the "Do not use SETUP cartridges" error.

I see many people with the same error.  How is it that your printer can have so many problems (printhead, non-existent paper jams, reports of empty cartridges when they are not) and refuses to allow users to get past them and do their work?  How do I fix this?  And if you tell me to buy new cartridges, I want a refund on those I already purchased!

Hi @monkr63,

I'd like to help!

The reset will not work with non-HP ink cartridges.

Update the printer firmware-

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

The third-party ink cartridges will work. But there are many cartridges in the market which is refilled and sometimes the chip is not configured to work with the printer. You need to contact the cartridge manufacturer and find out why its not working. Try a different cartridge supplier and check if that works.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I will try it.

For the record, these are OEM, not aftermarket, cartridges.  They have HP printed all over them- there is no question.
