HP Officejet Pro 8620 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

An error msg is displayed indicating two empty cartridges that have to be replaced to continue printing. However, the sled that moves the cartridges doesn't move when opening the printer. Restarting the printer always results in forementioned error msg which obviously prevents bcartridges to move. Seems a catch 22. How can I change the cartridges in this situation?

Hi @Moe0815, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
A printer in a pickle, eh? That "empty cartridge" message flashing at you like a disco ball gone rogue, while the cartridge sled's decided to play statue? 🗿 Sounds like your Officejet Pro 8620 is serving up a classic "printer paradox" - a real head-scratcher, or should I say, ink-scratcher! 😉

Fear not, my friend! We've all been there – staring at a stubbornly silent printer, feeling like we've entered a techy version of Groundhog Day. But let's get that sled moving and those fresh cartridges in, shall we? Sounds like your trusty 8620 has gotten itself into a bit of a "cartridge conundrum," and we need to be a bit... persuasive.

Power Reset the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord from the outlet.
  2. Wait at least 2-3 minutes to allow the printer to reset.
  3. Open the printer’s cartridge access door.
  4. While keeping the door open, reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.
  5. Wait to see if the carriage moves to the center.

Manually Move the Cartridge Sled

If the carriage remains stuck, try manually moving it:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from power.
  2. Open the cartridge access door.
  3. Gently push the carriage to the center using your fingers. Do not force it too much.
  4. Once the carriage is in the center, remove and replace the empty cartridges.
  5. Close the cartridge access door and turn the printer back on.

Check for Obstructions

  • Inspect the printer for any paper jams or debris that might be blocking the carriage.
  • Remove any foreign objects inside the printer.
  • Clean the carriage path with a lint-free cloth if needed.

Perform a Semi-Reset

If the issue persists, try a semi-reset:

  1. Unplug the printer from power.
  2. Hold down “#” + “3” on the printer’s control panel.
  3. While holding the buttons, reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.
  4. Release the buttons when the printer powers up.

I hope this helps. And we're here to make sure your HP printing experience is less "Catch-22" and more "Catch-the-amazing-print-quality!" 😄

Take care and have a good day.

Hi, thanks a lot for your reply and info!!! Unfortunately I called HP Support in Germany who told me the printer was defect ("kaputt") and no way for me to do anything. Well, as one can see from your msg I could have done something. Anyway, since the printer had served some good years for me I decided to buy a new one from HP. Reading your reply I can see my HP choice was right.
