Envy 5660 printer makes grinding noise that lasts for a few seconds on right side of the unit.

I think it has something to do with resetting the print cartridges once the printing is completed.

I cleaned all the paper feeding wheels and the cartridge area which is on the right side.

Any ideas or solutions?

Thanks

Hi @cat23645,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A grinding noise in your HP Envy 5660 printer, especially when the cartridges are resetting, typically points to an issue with the carriage or the paper feed mechanism. Here are some steps you can take to diagnose and potentially resolve the issue:

1. Check for Obstructions

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open the printer and carefully inspect the carriage area (where the print cartridges are housed) for any obstructions, such as pieces of paper, paper clips, or other debris.Manually move the carriage to see if it moves smoothly from side to side.

2. Inspect the Carriage and Gears

  • Check the gears and moving parts on the right side of the printer for any signs of damage or wear.Ensure there are no broken or misaligned gears that could be causing the grinding noise.

3. Clean the Carriage and Encoder Strip

  • Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to clean the carriage and the encoder strip (a clear plastic strip with fine lines located near the carriage path).Ensure the encoder strip is not twisted or out of place.

4. Reinstall the Ink Cartridges

  • Remove the ink cartridges and inspect them for any damage or leaks.Reinsert the cartridges securely and ensure they are seated properly.

5. Lubricate the Carriage Rail

  • Using a cotton swab, apply a small amount of silicon-based lubricant to the metal carriage rail to ensure smooth movement of the carriage.

6. Run a Printer Diagnostic

  • Use the printer’s built-in diagnostic tools to check for any errors or issues. On the printer's control panel, navigate to the "Settings" or "Tools" menu and select "Printer Maintenance" or "Diagnostics".

7. Firmware Update

  • Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. Visit the HP Support website and search for your printer model to find the latest firmware updates.Download and install any available updates.

8. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.Wait for about 1-2 minutes to allow any residual power to dissipate.Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

9. Perform a Hard Reset

  • While the printer is on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.Wait for about 60 secondsPlug the power cord back into the printer and turn it on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Went through each of the suggestions with no change in the grinding.

There is a little white gear on the right side of the cartridge rail that appears to be source. When the rail resets (cycles) after printing that is when the grinding happens. The grinding noise is synchronized with the rail cycling.

Does that sound like it could be the cause? Anyway, to fix it?
