Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

HP OfficeJet 6978 All in one. Network connected. no prior issues using it with 4-6 ThinkPad T series laptops.

I bought 2 extra sets of cartridges for it when I first got it, TWO EXACT SETS OF CARTRIDGES 902xl BLACK WITH 902 regular COLOR, 4 cart set. I put one set in couple years ago, and now that set is almost out. The Magenta is nearly gone. So I put the other one in and it got the older generation cartridge error. Ummmm, it is the EXACT SAME CARTRIDGE that was in there. So What is HP doing with EXPIRING cartridge sets when they have never been opened. Note it's not really an older gen, it is HP insidiously EXPIRING cartridges that have never been used. That's not only wrong it's insidious. And it blocks the printer from doing ANYTHING until the "offending" cartridge(s) are replaced with "PROPER" ones. Well, I got an office depot set and got the non HP cartridge block, again printer locks up until they are removed. Yeah, I accidentally allowed the printer to "upgrade the firmware" a while ago. That's been shut off, but now the damage is done. So who knows a link to the initial version of the firmware.
