Hi @johnnyapplesead,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're encountering an "out of date" error message with genuine HP 902 cartridges in your HP Officejet Pro 6978 All-In-One Printer, you can try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Check Cartridge Expiration Date: Ensure that the cartridges are not past their expiration date. Cartridges typically have an expiration date printed on them. If they are expired, replace them with new, unexpired cartridges.
  • Update Printer Firmware: Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. You can check for and update the firmware through the printer's control panel or by visiting the official HP support website.
  • Restart the Printer: Sometimes, simply restarting the printer can resolve temporary issues. Turn off the printer, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
  • Clean Cartridge Contacts: Turn off the printer and unplug it. Remove the cartridges and gently clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridges and the printhead with a lint-free cloth or cotton swab. Make sure they are dry before reinstalling.
  • Reinstall Cartridges: Remove the cartridges and reinstall them securely. Ensure that they click into place. Close the cartridge access door and restart the printer.
  • Check Date and Time Settings: Ensure that the date and time settings on your printer are correct. Sometimes, incorrect date and time settings can cause issues with genuine cartridge recognition.

Remember that using genuine HP cartridges is crucial for optimal performance and to avoid potential issues with your printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
