I just installed a full set (3 colors+black) of factory HP 206X cartridges for my M283cdw laser printer. Since the installation the printer has been making a grinding noise and does not seem to print in black. It can print the test page, but only the colors show up, if I print a black page then I get a basically empty page. If I return the old (almost empty) black cartridge then I don't hear the grinding noise. I tried to unplug the printer for a while, but it did not solve the issue.

@BVBVBV, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like the grinding noise and black toner not printing could be due to a misaligned or defective black toner cartridge. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help resolve this:
Verify Cartridge Authenticity
Ensure the HP 206X cartridges are genuine HP products. Non-genuine or defective cartridges can cause mechanical issues.
Inspect the Black Toner Cartridge
Since the grinding noise stops when the old black cartridge is reinstalled, the new black cartridge may be:
- Misaligned
- Defective
- Obstructed by packaging material
Action:
- Power off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the toner access door.
- Remove the black toner cartridge.
- Check for:
- Any protective tape or seals left on the cartridge.
- Physical damage or irregularities.
- Reinsert the cartridge firmly and evenly.
Swap Cartridges (if available)
If you have another black HP 206X cartridge (even a used one), try installing it to confirm if the issue is specific to the new cartridge.
Check for Firmware Updates
Outdated firmware can cause cartridge recognition issues.
- Go to HP Support page and enter your printer model.
- Download and install the latest firmware.
Reset the Printer
Sometimes a full reset can help:
- Unplug the printer while it’s on.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and power it on.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
