HP ENVY 5535 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've spent MANY, MANY hours trying to resolve this problem - nothing helps.

I have an HP 5530e printer that, when printing from Windows, gives me an "Out of Toner" message. This happens whether I try to print wirelessly from Windows, or via a USB cable. However, if I print from my phone or tablet, it works fine. It also works if I send an email to the printer (it is Web-connected) with the document(s) I want to print attached. So, contrary to previous suggestions, I don't think I have a hardware problem.

The cartridge is a genuine HP #61 colour cartridge (even though it should not HAVE to be), there is plenty of ink, and the so-called "Cartridge Protection" is turned off.

I have uninstalled and re-installed drivers MANY times.  I have reset the printer according to the provided instructions MANY times.

To me, this all smells suspiciously like a consequence of HP's ILLEGAL attempt to ensure that only HP cartridges will work in their printers. I understand that the message does not explicitly call out non-genuine cartridges but it SMELLS!

Hi @drwob,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you have already tried several troubleshooting steps without success.

Here are a few more things you can try to resolve this problem:

1. Check for Firmware Updates

Ensure your printer firmware is up to date. Sometimes, outdated firmware can cause compatibility issues with the printer drivers or the operating system. Update the firmware on an HP printer

2. Use HP Print and Scan Doctor

HP provides a utility called HP Print and Scan Doctor. This tool can diagnose and fix many printing and scanning problems. You can download it from the HP website. HP Print and Scan Doctor

3. Remove and Reinstall the Printer Completely

  • Uninstall the Printer:
    • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    • Right-click on your HP 5530e printer and select Remove device.
    • Make sure to remove all instances if the printer is listed multiple times.
  • Delete Printer Drivers:
    • Open Print Management (you can find it by searching in the Start menu).
    • Navigate to Print Servers > Your Computer > Drivers.
    • Right-click and delete any driver associated with your HP printer.
  • Reinstall the Printer:
    • Download the latest driver from the HP website.
    • Install the driver and reconnect your printer.

4. Check Printer Settings in Windows

  • Printer Properties:
    • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    • Right-click on your HP 5530e printer and select Printer properties.
    • Ensure that the correct port is selected (USB or network port).
  • Print Preferences:
    • Check if there are any settings related to toner or ink notifications and adjust them if needed.

5. Check Windows Services

  • Print Spooler Service:
    • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box.
    • Type services.msc and press Enter.
    • Find Print Spooler, right-click on it, and select Restart.

6. Disable SNMP Status

Sometimes, SNMP status monitoring can cause issues with network printers:

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click on your HP 5530e printer and select Printer properties.
  • Click on the Ports tab.
  • Select the port your printer is using and click Configure Port.
  • Uncheck SNMP Status Enabled and click OK.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
