HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

I have completed all the related help offerings, as well as other tasks, removed HP, and reinstalled. Cleaned Print Heads through level 3, etc. My test pages still do not print in any color. All ink levels are registering (they are brand new and HP genuine). Firmware, unplugging, and removing HP programs have not corrected the problem. Black prints wonderfully, and yes, Greyscale is off.

Hi @Eliz1910

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like you've already tried many troubleshooting steps for your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978, but the color printing issue persists.

Here are some additional steps you can try to resolve the problem:

1. Verify Cartridge Installation

  • Steps:
    1. Remove the color cartridges and inspect them for any damage or dried ink.
    2. Clean the cartridge contacts with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.
    3. Reinsert the cartridges securely and ensure they click into place.

2. Perform a Manual Printhead Cleaning

  • If the automated cleaning cycles haven't worked, try manually cleaning the printhead:
    1. Remove the cartridges and locate the printhead assembly.
    2. Use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water to gently clean the nozzles.
    3. Allow the printhead to dry completely before reinstalling the cartridges.

3. Check Printer Settings

  • Steps:
    1. On your computer, go to the printer settings or preferences.
    2. Ensure that "Print in Grayscale" or "Black & White" is not selected.
    3. Set the color mode to "Color" or "Automatic."

4. Update Printer Firmware

  • Visit the HP Support Community for your printer model and check for firmware updates.
  • Download and install any available updates to ensure compatibility and improved performance.

5. Reset the Printer

  • Steps:
    1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
    2. Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
    3. Test the printer again to see if the issue is resolved.

If this solution hits the spot, please come back and click "Accepted Solution" to help others find the answer. And if you'd like to say thanks, select "Yes" on the bottom left of the public post, as that would make our day! 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!
