Hi @Bklynite,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

Yes, remanufactured inkjet cartridges can sometimes cause error messages like "problem with printer or ink system" on HP printers, including the HP 8600 Premium. Here are some potential reasons why this might happen and steps you can take to troubleshoot:

Potential Causes:

Cartridge Quality:

  • Remanufactured cartridges may not always meet the same quality standards as original HP cartridges, leading to compatibility issues or faulty performance.

Ink Level Detection:

  • The printer might have difficulty reading the ink levels of remanufactured cartridges, leading to errors.

Chip Issues:

  • Many remanufactured cartridges use third-party chips that might not communicate correctly with the printer.

Physical Defects:

  • There could be physical defects or improper filling in the remanufactured cartridges causing the printer to detect an issue.

Troubleshooting Steps:

Reinstall Cartridges:

  • Remove the remanufactured cartridges and reinstall them. Ensure they are seated properly and securely in their slots.

Clean Cartridge Contacts:

  • Use a lint-free cloth to gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts in the printer.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Use Original HP Cartridges:

  • Replace the remanufactured cartridges with genuine HP cartridges to see if the error persists. If the error goes away, the remanufactured cartridges were likely the cause.

Hi @Bklynite,

Please find the next set of steps below.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Ensure your printer firmware is up to date. Sometimes, firmware updates improve compatibility with third-party cartridges.

Reset the Printer:

  • On some HP printers, you can reset the printer to its factory settings through the menu. Refer to the user manual for specific instructions.

Check for Leaks or Damage:

  • Inspect the remanufactured cartridges for any signs of leaks, damage, or defects.

If the Error Persists:

  • Contact the Supplier:
    • If the error persists with remanufactured cartridges, contact the supplier of the cartridges for support or replacement.
  • HP Support:
    • If the problem continues even with genuine HP cartridges, it may be a hardware issue. Contact HP Support for further assistance.
