HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently replaced my Black 952XL cartridge - yes, it's HP branded - and got the error message about unable to use continuous ink.  I went through HP AI support and had a replacement sent.  While the printer is acknowledging the HP brand ink, it's showing it at 10% of life left but it's brand new!?

And now that my Yellow ink is out, I replaced it - again with HP brand cartridge - and now it's saying it's incompatible because the printer can't use continuous ink.

I updated the firmware over the week, so it's new, and shouldn't be the problem.

What in the world is going on with HP printers??

@PrinterFiasco, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your HP 8710!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Let's work together to resolve this issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710.

Power Reset the Printer

  • While the printer is on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet (avoid power strips).
  • Turn the printer back on and check if the issue persists.

Check Ink Cartridge Compatibility

  • Ensure you're using genuine HP 952 or 952XL ink cartridges.
  • Verify that the cartridge’s region matches the printer’s region (some cartridges are region-specific).

Reseat the Cartridges

  • Remove all ink cartridges from the printer.
  • Clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Reinsert the cartridges and check for any error messages.

Perform a Hard Reset & Firmware Check

  • Since you've updated the firmware recently, perform a hard reset:
    • Unplug the power cord while the printer is on.
    • Hold the Power button for 30 seconds.
    • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • Double-check the firmware update:
    • On the printer control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer to confirm it’s on the latest version.

Run a Diagnostic Print Report

  • On the printer control panel, go to Setup > Reports > Print Quality Report to check ink levels and cartridge status.

If after these steps the issue persists, let me know the exact error code/message displayed and whether you're enrolled in HP Instant Ink (if applicable). We’ll continue troubleshooting from there!

Looking forward to your update.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
