Having just received my first set of Instant Inks, fitted the new colour cartridge. Error signal Cartridges Require HP Instant Ink Enrolment and therefore it will not print.

Hi @Stuart347,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP DeskJet 4220e is enrolled in Instant Ink, but after installing the new color cartridge it shows “Cartridges require HP Instant Ink enrolment” and won’t print. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Confirm the printer is enrolled and online
Open the HP Smart app and make sure the printer shows Ready / Online.
The printer must be connected to the internet to validate Instant Ink cartridges.

Sign in to the correct HP account
In HP Smart, sign in using the same HP account that was used to enroll the printer.
Using a different account can cause the cartridge enrolment error.

Restart the printer and refresh connection
Turn off the printer and unplug it for 30 seconds.
Plug it back in, power it on, and wait until it fully connects to Wi-Fi.

Reseat the cartridges
Open the cartridge access door and remove both cartridges.
Reinsert them firmly until they click into place, then close the door.

Check cartridge authenticity
Make sure the cartridges installed are marked as HP Instant Ink and are for the DeskJet 4220e.
Standard (non-Instant Ink) cartridges will not work while enrolled.

Update printer firmware
In HP Smart, check for any printer updates and install them.
Outdated firmware can prevent the printer from recognizing enrolled cartridges.

Allow time for account sync
Leave the printer powered on and connected to the internet for 30–60 minutes.
Sometimes enrolment status takes time to sync after the first cartridge installation.

Verify Instant Ink status
Log in to your HP Instant Ink account and confirm the printer status shows Active.
If it shows pending or offline, the printer will block printing.

I hope this helps.
