@BillHounslow,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

1. Reseat All Connections

  • Power off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the printer and carefully disconnect and reconnect the printhead ribbon cables and any visible connectors (sometimes, loose cables cause communication errors).

2. Check the Carriage Assembly

  • Move the printhead carriage manually (when the printer is off) to see if it's obstructed.
  • If it resists movement or feels rough, the carriage belt or motor could be failing.

3. Try a Different Firmware

  • Check if a firmware update is available and attempt a manual reinstall (sometimes, firmware bugs cause hardware-like failures).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks.  I feel almost too embarrassed to say that it's all fixed now.  When changing the colour cartridge, I stupidly put the old one back in and discarded the unused one.  Luckily I could retrieve it.

I must be getting old.

Thanks for your help.
