HP Color Laser MFP 178nw

Hi there,

Hopefully somebody can assist with my questions.

My HP MFP 178nw is printing blurry documents. I took out the cartridges, gave a little shake because i have not been using the printer for quite a while.

The HP Smart program indicated I have sufficient ink in my cartridges. Anybody encounter such issue?

Hi @Parrotfish1973,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP LaserJet MFP 178nw is printing blurry documents, which can often be caused by several factors, even if the cartridges have ink. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.

Check for Low or Dry Toner:

  • Even if the HP Smart program shows sufficient ink, toner can sometimes settle or dry out in unused cartridges, especially after long periods of inactivity. You may want to try shaking the cartridge more thoroughly and reinserting it to see if that helps. If the problem persists, you might need to replace the toner cartridge.

Clean the Printer Components:

  • Dust or toner build-up on the drum or other internal components can cause blurry prints. Check the drum and other components for any visible toner residue or dirt. Gently clean these parts with a lint-free cloth or a toner cleaning tool.

Run a Printer Cleaning Cycle:

  • Most HP printers offer a built-in cleaning function through the printer settings or HP Smart app. This can help remove any dust or toner buildup from the rollers and other moving parts.

Check Print Settings:

  • Ensure that your print settings are correctly set to the intended quality. For example, if you're using a setting optimized for draft printing, it may cause prints to appear blurry. Adjust the print quality settings to a higher standard.

Perform a Printer Self-Test:

  • You can print a self-test page directly from the printer to see if the issue persists with a diagnostic print. If the self-test print is also blurry, it's likely a hardware issue with the toner or internal components.

Update or Reinstall Drivers:

  • Make sure that your printer drivers are up-to-date. Sometimes outdated or corrupted drivers can cause print quality issues. You can update or reinstall the drivers from the HP website.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden,

Thanks for the advice and i have given the black cartridge a really hard shake and it seems have a more solid print. Still a little blurry in a few places but not as bad as the earlier one. However i do not have stuff to print at the moment so will try it out again in due time.

Hopefully it will work as i do not want to waste $ buying a new cartridge and ends up not the cartridge problem.

Your advice is really appreciated.

Hi Alden4,

I have tried giving the black cartridge a hard shake and did another print after. Result is still the same (Blurry). I cannot be sure if it is the black cartridge issue and i do not want to waste $ buying a new cartridge and in the end turn out not the cartridge issue. When i print in color it seems the color images turn out ok...... Any other alternative advice?

Hi Alden4,

I just went to the local IT store and replace the black cartridge. The print looks good now. I reckon the problem lays with the old cartridge. My impression is laser cartridge will not turn dry like the ink cartridge. Guess i was wrong.... Anyway thanks for the earlier advice.
