Hi @Gina118,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP LaserJet 400 M451dw is experiencing color skipping and making unusual sounds, there are several potential causes for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can take.
Check Toner Cartridges:
- Ensure that all the toner cartridges are securely and correctly installed.
- Remove and reseat each toner cartridge to make sure they are properly seated.
Inspect Drum Units:
- Check the drum units for any visible damage or irregularities.
- Replace any drum units that appear to be damaged.
Clean the Printer:
- Dust and debris can accumulate inside the printer and affect its performance. Clean the printer thoroughly, paying attention to areas around the toner cartridges and the paper path.
Update Firmware:
- Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. Check the HP website for firmware updates and follow the instructions for updating.
Check for Paper Jams:
- Even if the printer doesn't show a paper jam error, check for any paper remnants or obstructions in the paper path. Remove any jams if found.
Perform a Calibration:
- Many printers have a calibration or alignment function that can help correct color registration issues. Refer to your printer's manual for instructions on how to perform a calibration.
Print a Configuration Report:
- Print a configuration or status report from the printer's control panel. This report can provide information about the printer's current status and any error messages.
Check for Error Codes:
- Look for any error codes or messages displayed on the printer's control panel. These can provide clues about the nature of the problem.
Inspect the Imaging Drum:
- The imaging drum is responsible for transferring the toner to the paper. If it's damaged or worn out, it can lead to print quality issues. Check the imaging drum for any signs of damage or wear and consider replacing it if needed.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Cleaned thoroughly with compressed air and now it refuses to even print intermittently like it was before. Gets stuck at the very beginning of the print cycle making the repeated noise. Won't stop until I turn it off.
