HP Recommended

I have a HP LaserJet M255dw and, all of a sudden, have a 'supply problem'.  Reading up on it, the implication is that an auto-downloaded firmware upgrade has stopped me using my generic ink cartridges (although it's showing an alert on the magenta cartridge only - which is odd in itself).  Also reading various posts, I've seen I need to downgrade the firmware, but I can't find the firmware file to use.  I've found the firmware for the HP Laser Jet M254dw model, but assume I can't use this.  Or can I?

 

I know the other solution is simply to purchase HP branded cartridges, but when the magenta cartridge is pretty full and the printer was working absolutely fine until recently, I'd rather find a fix than waste good money! 

 

Any sources for the M255dw firmware, or other suitable guidance, very welcome please.
