HP Office Jet Pro 6978 won't let me use 3rd party ink?

Well, it might be time to dump HP and find a different printer company.  I have always used both HP & 3rd party inks for my Office Jet Pro 6978 printer... but with several updates and very intrusive business practices, I am thinking HP has lost a customer.  After reading many on this discussion board, there are many more that will eventually leave HP.

I should have the right to use whatever ink I buy to print my documents but HP seems to disagree. I used to use genuine HP ink about 50-60% of the time, but now I can't use any 3rd party ink?  I've tried downloading firmware degrader, but can't find any that work.  HP help is none excitant, they know what they have done and do not want to give their customers choices.  I am currently on my 4-5 print from HP over the last 10 years & was a loyal customer, but with their ink prices skyrocketing I have had to chose other options at time, but this is probably the last straw with HP.  If anyone has fix, a real fix, please commit and help me out if you can.  If not, I'll look at Epson or a few other printer companies.
