HP Office Jet Pro 8715 cartridge carriage is making unusual grinding noises at the beginning of each print. On one occasion cartridge holder got stuck and did not slide to the left when I opened its door. Printer is out of warranty and I'm trying to figure out if there is something I can do to fix it before it breaks completely.

Hi @2025MB
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Please try the steps below:
Check for obstructions in the carriage path
Remove any loose paper or obstructions that might be blocking the carriage path.
If the Cancel button on the control panel is lit, press it and wait until the printer is silent.
Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord.
Open the cartridge access door to get to the carriage inside the printer.
Examples of a cartridge access door
Make sure the carriage is not obstructed by gently sliding the carriage side to side.
Look for and remove any obstructions in the carriage path, such as crumpled paper or dislodged labels.
CAUTION:
Do not tilt an ink tank printer when attempting to remove obstructions as ink might spill.
Example of a printer with an obstruction in the carriage path
If the carriage has a latch, gently press it down to make sure it is locked into place.
CAUTION:
If the carriage latch of an ink tank printer is secured, do not press down on it to avoid printer damage.
Examples of the carriage latch
If the carriage is not locked in place, move it to each side, removing any obstructions blocking its path.
CAUTION:
Do not force the carriage to move if it is locked or stuck. This can damage the printer.
Close the printer door.
Reconnect the power cord and turn on your printer.
Reset the printer
Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.
If your printer has a rechargeable battery, remove it.
Press the power button to turn off the printer. If the printer does not turn off, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the power source.
Wait 60 seconds.
Connect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and to the printer.
Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Thanks for your suggested solution, but it did not work. There were no visible obstructions.
NOTE: printer cartridge on HP 8715 does not slide when door is opened unless powered on.
While printer was powered on and cartridge was accessible I used your suggestion to locate the cartridge latch and gently removed it. I could see nothing obvious that was interfering.
I did try running "print head cleaning" a few times which improved print quality, BUT it is still making louder than usual noises (sometimes clicking) and going through numerous cycles when preparing to print and when finished with print jobs.

Hi @2025MB ,
We apologize for the inconvenience. The issue seems to persist even after attempting the troubleshooting steps mentioned above.
It looks like your printer has a hardware issue that may not be cost-effective to repair. To avoid ongoing frustration, upgrading to a new printer with the latest features might be the best option.
If you are interested to know more about the upgrade options I would need a few details.
