I have a second hand 3830 OfficeJet with Instant Ink cartridges from the original owner.  My Instant Ink account will not recognize the printer or let me use the remaining ink cartridges.

Welcome to the HP English Community --

 

That is the normal behavior.

 

The Instant Ink subscriptions cartridges work with a current and active Instant Ink subscription that is tied to that printer and those (subscription) cartridges.

 

The Instant Ink cartridges that came with the printer will not work in any printer.

 

Reminder to those reading

Instant Ink is an Optional subscription service.

You do not need a subscription to use your printer.

 

Want to add or move a subscribed printer?

 

If you have a current Instant Ink Subscription,

You can add a printer or transfer your subscription from one printer to another printer that is eligible for the Instant Ink service.

 

For example,

 

Instant Ink account management 

Section Replace an enrolled printer

Add more printers
