Printer will not read cyan, magenta, yellow & black all at same time, once all cartridges are in it will say the color cartridges are damaged. Take any one out and they all show fine, replace that one for a complete set…won’t work. Replaced with brand new cartridges. Removed everything, cleaned. Nothing works.

Hi @JustinEnterpris ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you’ve tried several troubleshooting steps for your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus, but the issue persists. Here are some additional steps you can take to diagnose and potentially fix the problem:
1. Check for Firmware Updates: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. Firmware updates can resolve compatibility issues with ink cartridges.
- You can check for updates via the printer's control panel or by visiting the HP support website.
2. Inspect the Cartridges:
- Authenticity: Ensure that the cartridges are genuine HP products. Non-genuine or refilled cartridges can sometimes cause these issues.
- Contacts: Double-check the gold contacts on the cartridges and the corresponding contacts in the printer. Even small amounts of dirt or residue can cause issues. Use a lint-free cloth and distilled water or isopropyl alcohol to clean them.
3. Reset the Printer:
- Hard Reset: Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for about 60 seconds before plugging it back in and turning it on.
4. Check the Carriage:
- Ensure that the cartridge carriage moves freely. Sometimes, a paper jam or obstruction can cause issues with cartridge recognition.
5. Printer Diagnostics:
- Run a printer diagnostics tool or self-test from the printer's menu to check for hardware issues.
6. Re-seat Cartridges:
- Remove all the cartridges and inspect them for any visible damage. Reinsert them one by one, ensuring they click into place securely.
Step-by-Step Guide for Firmware Update:
Update from Control Panel:
- On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to check for and install any updates.
Update via Computer:
- Go to the HP support website and enter your printer model.
- Download and install any available firmware updates.
Step-by-Step Guide for Cleaning Cartridge Contacts:
Turn off the Printer:
- Ensure the printer is turned off and unplugged from the power source.
Remove the Cartridges:
- Open the printer's cartridge access door and carefully remove each cartridge.
Clean Contacts:
- Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
- Gently wipe the gold-colored contacts on each cartridge.
- Also, clean the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
Allow to Dry:
- Let the contacts dry completely before reinserting the cartridges.
Reinsert Cartridges:
- Carefully reinsert each cartridge, ensuring they click into place securely.
Turn on the Printer:
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on to see if the issue is resolved.
