HP Pro 7740 first showed that the yellow ink needed to be replace. I put a new on in then the black showed it needed to be replace and it was replace but still show empty and now the new yellow is half way empty. I unplugged and plugged in the printer. Turned off and on a few times. Changed the cartridges again. cleaned the copper strips and nothing still showing yellow half empty and black empty even though both are new.

Hi @JC5555

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating cartridge recognition issue on your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740. Let’s try to get this resolved.

The problem might be related to the printer’s firmware, ink sensors, or cartridge contacts.

Here are some steps to consider:

1. Verify Cartridge Authenticity

Ensure you’re using genuine HP ink cartridges. Sometimes, third-party or refilled cartridges may not be recognized correctly.

Check the cartridges for any packaging labels or indicators confirming they are authentic.

2. Perform a Hard Reset

Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.

Wait for at least 5 minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can reset the internal memory and help the printer recognize the cartridges.

3. Inspect Cartridge Installation

Remove the cartridges and reinstall them firmly. Ensure they click into place correctly.

Double-check that the yellow and black cartridges are inserted into the correct slots.

4. Clean the Cartridge and Printer Contacts

Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol to gently clean the copper contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer. Allow them to dry before reinstalling the cartridges.

5. Update Printer Firmware

HP regularly releases new firmware versions for printer enhancements, app updates, or issue fixes. Update the firmware regularly to get the most out of your printer.

Click on the link below for instructions on how to update the firmware of your printer.

6. Align the Printer

Access the printer menu or the HP Smart app to run a printhead alignment. This can recalibrate the printer and help it detect ink levels accurately.

7. Reset Ink Cartridge Settings

Some HP printers allow you to reset the ink levels manually:

Access the printer’s settings menu and look for an option like “Reset Ink Levels” or “Cartridge Settings.”

This may not be available on all models, but it’s worth checking.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
