I bought the HP XL 67 thinking I was supposed to get at least 200 printed pages and I've only got 125 which is literally about the same as HP 67.  Why is this?  I thought I was saving money by buying the XL, but not the case.

Hi @Luey

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how disappointing it feels to expect more pages from an XL cartridge and then see results that look almost the same as the standard size. Thank you for sharing the details—it helps us look closely at why the yield can vary.

Why Page Yield Can Differ

  • Page Coverage: The rated yield (around 200 pages for HP 67XL) is based on printing at 5% coverage per page. If your documents have photos, graphics, or heavy text, each page uses more ink, reducing the total count.
  • Print Settings: Printing in best quality or color‑rich modes consumes more ink than draft or normal settings.
  • Maintenance Cycles: Automatic cleaning cycles use small amounts of ink to keep the printhead clear. Over time, this reduces the available ink for printing.
  • Paper Type and Usage: Certain papers absorb more ink, and frequent short print jobs can trigger extra priming cycles.

Steps to Maximize Yield

Check Print Settings

  • In Windows, go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
  • Select your printer, then Printing preferences.
  • Choose Draft mode or Economy mode for everyday documents.

Use Black‑Only Printing When Possible

  • For text documents, select Print in grayscale to reduce color ink usage.

Limit Cleaning Cycles

  • Avoid powering the printer on and off repeatedly.
  • Keep the printer connected to power so it can maintain the printhead efficiently.

Monitor Ink Usage in HP App

  • Install or open the HP App on your computer.
  • Add your printer and check ink levels regularly.
  • Download here: HP App for Windows

Understand Yield Estimates

  • The XL cartridge does contain more ink than the standard, but actual yield depends on your printing habits.
  • If your pages are consistently high coverage, the yield will be lower than the rated estimate.

Helpful Resource

For more details on how page yield is determined, you can refer to: HP Ink Cartridge Page Yield

So while the XL cartridge does provide more ink, the number of pages you get depends heavily on coverage and settings. By adjusting print preferences and monitoring usage, you can stretch the cartridge further.
