HP...do better please! Why can't I print in black ink, just because one cartridge is empty???

I sure hope HP will work on this really major inconvenience!  I went to buy a replacement black cartridge, because all I use is black ink; however, I can't print a black and white document because the magenta is depleted.  In this technological world, there's no way to bypass this???  It's ridiculous, and it feels like you're just trying to be greedy.  I sure hope later models have figured out how to bypass this, because it's really effed up that I just made a trip for ink, but it won't print because a color I don't need is empty!!!

It depends on a printer model, some HP models can print only with black even if colors are empty or missing, but Officejet 8600 can't, it will stop printing if any ink cartridge is empty.
