Hi @jqh,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you've purchased an HP 64 ink cartridge to replace an HP 61 cartridge in your HP 5530 printer, and the printer is rejecting it, there are a few things you can check and try to resolve the issue.

  • Compatibility: Ensure that the HP 64 cartridge is compatible with your HP 5530 printer. While it's common for printers to have a range of compatible cartridges, it's essential to confirm that the specific model matches your printer's requirements.
  • Correct Installation: Make sure that you have installed the cartridge correctly. Open the printer cover and check if the cartridge is securely in place. It should click into position. If there's any doubt, consult the printer manual for proper installation instructions.
  • Firmware Update: Some printers require firmware updates to recognize new cartridges. Check the HP support website for any available firmware updates for your HP 5530 printer. Updating the firmware may resolve compatibility issues.
  • Clean Contacts: Ensure that the cartridge contacts and the corresponding contacts in the printer are clean. Use a lint-free cloth or cotton swab to gently clean the electrical contacts. This helps establish a good connection.
  • Restart Printer: Try turning off the printer, unplugging it from the power source, and waiting for a few minutes before plugging it back in and turning it on. This can sometimes reset the printer's internal settings and resolve cartridge recognition issues.
  • Check Cartridge Expiration Date: Verify the expiration date on the HP 64 cartridge. If the cartridge has expired, the printer may reject it. Replace it with a cartridge that is within its validity period.

Remember that using third-party or refilled cartridges might also cause compatibility issues, and it's recommended to use genuine HP cartridges for optimal performance and to avoid potential problems.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for the ideas.  I cut to the chase and used another 61 cartridge and it worked.  I took the defective cartridge back to the seller and got my money back..
