Printer HP smart tank 517 prints ok but left side, specially top left corner letters are missing or smeared. Sometimes even in the middle of the page some letters are not showing or partially smeared. Cleaned many times. Tried to perform alignment but gives me an error message saying "check maintenance manual" .. have no idea where the maintenance manual is .

Hi @MoSaadat,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like you're experiencing print quality issues with your HP Smart Tank 517 printer. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and improve the print quality.

Check Ink Levels: Ensure that all ink tanks have sufficient ink. If any tank is low or empty, replace the ink cartridge.

Print Head Alignment: Since you mentioned an error during the alignment process, try the following:

  • Make sure you are following the correct steps for aligning the print heads as per the printer manual.
  • If there is an error message, refer to the printer's user manual or maintenance manual for guidance. The maintenance manual might be available on the HP website.

Clean Print Heads: Run the printer's built-in cleaning utility. Most printers have a tool or utility for cleaning the print heads. Refer to your printer's manual for instructions on how to access and use this feature.

Check Paper Quality: Ensure you are using the correct type and quality of paper for your printer. Low-quality or incompatible paper may affect print quality.

Update Firmware/Drivers: Make sure that your printer firmware and drivers are up-to-date. Visit the HP website to download and install the latest firmware and drivers for your printer model.

Inspect the Print Cartridges: Check the print cartridges for any defects or issues. Remove and reseat the cartridges to ensure they are properly installed.

Calibrate the Printer: Some printers allow you to calibrate the print settings. Check your printer manual for instructions on how to calibrate the printer to improve print quality.

Check for Physical Obstructions: Inspect the printer for any physical obstructions or debris that may be affecting the print quality. Clean the printer thoroughly, especially in areas where the paper travels.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
