I have HP5544 printer using HP Instaink - both colour and black are at good levels - but I cannot get colour to print.

I have done a print quality diagnostic, cleaner printer head etc and the colour ink is showing, but when I print any document there is no colour.

I think it is something on my computer settings, but I haven't changed anything

Hi @DebbieC22,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP ENVY 5544 All-in-One Printer is not printing in color despite showing good ink levels and working in the diagnostic tests, the issue could indeed be related to your printer settings or driver. Here are some steps you can try to resolve it.

Check Printer Settings

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers (or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10/11).
  • Right-click on your HP ENVY 5544 All-in-One Printer and select Printing Preferences.
  • Look for an option like Print in Grayscale and make sure it is unchecked.
  • Ensure Color is selected as the default option for print.

Confirm Application-Specific Print Settings

  • When printing from an application (like Word or Adobe Reader), open the Print dialog.
  • Select Properties or Preferences next to the printer name, and ensure Color is selected there as well.
  • Some programs may default to grayscale or black and white, so it’s best to verify each time.

Reinstall or Update Printer Drivers

  • Sometimes, updating or reinstalling the printer driver can help reset settings to default.
  • Download the latest driver for your HP ENVY 5544 All-in-One Printer from the HP Support website and install it on your computer.
  • Restart your computer and try printing in color again.

Use the HP Smart App (if applicable)

  • Open the HP Smart app, go to Settings, and run Diagnostic or Print Test Page.
  • The HP Smart app can sometimes help reset settings or apply any missed updates.

Check HP Instant Ink Account (if enrolled)

  • Sometimes, issues with HP Instant Ink (like an expired plan or billing issue) might restrict printing. Check your Instant Ink account to ensure your subscription is active.

Reset the Printer

  • Unplug the printer from the power source, wait 60 seconds, and plug it back in.
  • Power it back on and try printing a color document to see if it works.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
