How do I disable cartridge protection?

Hi @McLeoTM,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

What exactly is the error message?  If the error is "Protected cartridge" or some similar then the printer is rejecting the cartridge is rejecting the cartridge because it was marked as protected in a different printer.  When a cartridge is installed in a printer with cartridge protection enabled (the default) it is marked as protected.  That cartridge then cannot be used in a different printer.

You can turn off cartridge protection, but it will only affect whether or not future cartridges inserted in the printer are marked as protected (and thus disabled from working in other printers).  Turning off cartridge protection will not affect cartridges that have already been protected in a different printer, they will still be rejected.

To turn off (or on) cartridge protection do the following:  find the IP address of the printer.   The easiest way to do this is to click on the wireless antenna symbol in the top row of the screen at the pritner's home screen.  This will bring up the printer's IP address, something like 192.168.0.11. Copy the IP address and enter it in your browser.  This will bring up the printer's Embedded Web Server.  From the printer's home page click Tools, Product Information, Supply Settings, and change Cartridge Protection for Off (or on if you want), Apply.
