Hi @adrian190,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how tricky it can be to remove the old cartridge from your HP ENVY 6420e All-in-One Printer, especially during a replacement. Let’s walk through the correct steps to safely remove and insert the new cartridge.

How to Remove and Replace Ink Cartridges in HP ENVY 6420e

1. Power On the Printer

  • Make sure the printer is turned on before opening the cartridge access door. The carriage will only move when powered.

2. Open the Ink Cartridge Access Door

  • Lift the top cover (not the scanner lid) until it clicks into place.
  • The carriage (where the cartridges sit) should move to the center automatically.

3. Wait for the Carriage to Stop Moving

  • Once it’s idle and silent, gently press down on the old cartridge to release it.
  • Pull it out toward you.

4. Insert the New Cartridge

  • Remove the protective tape from the new cartridge (don’t touch the copper contacts).
  • Slide it into the correct slot (black on the right, tri-color on the left).
  • Push until it clicks into place.

5. Close the Access Door

  • Lower the top cover and wait for the printer to align the cartridges.

If the Carriage Doesn’t Move to the Center

  • Make sure the printer is plugged in and powered on.
  • Try a power reset
    • Unplug the printer while it’s on.
    • Wait 30 seconds.
    • Plug it back in and turn it on.

If the carriage still doesn’t move, there may be a mechanical issue or obstruction.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
