How to exchange a brand new bad print cartridge for another?

I use 61xl cartridges and keep spares. Obviously I do not use color very much as the purchase receipt is 9/21/22 for the cartridge. The printer does not recognize the new cartridge.  I tried 3x to no avail. reinstalled the old one that is low on ink and it recognizes it fine. reinstalled the new one . NO good. reinstalled the old one and now wanting to exchange but wall mart will not due to age. Will HP ex
