How can I bypass cartridge protection and utilize third-party cartridges?

Hi @Katm281,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

HP printers, including the HP OfficeJet Pro 9018e, often have cartridge protection settings that prevent the use of third-party or refilled cartridges. However, using third-party cartridges in HP printers can be challenging due to HP's cartridge protection mechanisms. These settings help ensure optimal performance and print quality, but they can limit the use of non-HP cartridges.

Here's how you might attempt to bypass cartridge protection:

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Access Printer Settings:

  • Ensure your printer is powered on and connected to your computer or network.
  • Open the HP Smart app or go to the printer’s web interface using the IP address of the printer.

Login to Printer’s Web Interface:

  • Open a web browser and enter the printer’s IP address. This address can be found on the printer’s control panel under network settings.
  • Log in if required. You may need the admin password, which is usually found in the printer's documentation or set during initial setup.

Locate Cartridge Protection Settings:

  • In the printer’s web interface, navigate to Settings or Printer Maintenance.
  • Look for options such as Cartridge Protection, Cartridge Security, or similar.

Disable Cartridge Protection:

  • Find the option to disable Cartridge Protection. The exact navigation may vary, but it is typically under Settings > Printer Settings or Ink Cartridge Settings.
  • Select Disable or Turn Off Cartridge Protection.
  • Apply or save the changes.

Use Third-party Cartridges:

  • Install the third-party cartridges as you normally would.
  • If your printer prompts any warnings or errors about cartridges, follow the prompts to reset or confirm acceptance.

Important Considerations:

  • Warranty: Disabling cartridge protection and using third-party cartridges may void your printer’s warranty.
  • Firmware Updates: Be cautious with firmware updates, as updates can re-enable protections or further restrict third-party cartridge use.
  • Print Quality: Using third-party cartridges can sometimes lead to inferior print quality or fail to provide the same reliability as original HP cartridges.
